“Crow Planet”: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness by Lyanda Lynn HauptMuch of this book is a love psalm to the author's own philosophy and lifestyle and she uses crows much more as icons for her eclectic orientation than as topics of study. And that is perfectly fine. Eclectic folks and their outlooks are just as valid and often more fun than plenty of other people I've met.
I suppose Haupt could be described as an eco-freak but, if so, she is surely one of the more palatable ones. She might be described as a serendipitous philosopher but that probably tags almost anyone who takes charge of their life on their own terms instead of The Company's or The Government's terms. She certainly deserves to be labeled a talented writer because she writes with an entertaining style that, oddly enough, actually resembles the congenial writings of one Elizabeth Bacon Custer – widow of the gentleman whose famous military career ended in abrupt and smoky fashion along the Little Bighorn River in 1876.
Eclectic or not, what Haupt has to say here is very worth listening to. She makes a very strong case for “living the MINUTES of our lives right” wherever we are because each minute has value and opportunity that we shouldn't let escape.
She also regularly reminds the reader that the question is often more important than the answer.

Crow Planet Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness Lyanda Lynn Haupt 9780316019101 Books Reviews
Crows are pests because they thrive where humans live. Crows also provide a window into wildness and widsom, if we pay attention. Haupt pays attention. A professional naturalist stuck exiled from "nature" by circumstances and love, she saves her soul, and maybe ours, by finding nature in the city.
Great book for those interested in Crows. Beautifully written, so that you want to slow down and enjoy the author’s prose. I’m reading it already, and gifted this copy to a friend.
A marvellous study of the North American Crow, but much more than that. Part memoir, part climate change observation, part nature writing.
This is one of those books that somebody gives you (because they know you like crows?) and you dutifully figure you ought to read it. Think again! This is an extremely interesting, extremely well written book about crows (certainly) but more about how we fit into urban life. Very insightful, not preachy. I have bought numerous copies to give to deserving people. It's a book that's hard to classify, but you will not regret buying this book.
I had bought the book with the impression that it gave a good deal of information on Crows. At first it does but then becomes more of a environmental justice warrior pamphlet. I'm still looking on something that gives me more information on Crows.
Whoa.
About 2/3rds of the way through this book I realized it was actually about people, with crows as messenger and metaphor. Through "Crow Planet" I became better acquainted with crows through their behavior and without having to accept them strictly as clinical specimens. The author's treatise on examination and focus is revelatory.
Beautifully written. My life is better now.
Thank you, Lyanda Haupt.
Lyanda Lynn Haupt writes beautifully about birds, combining childlike wonder and delight in nature with the marvelous range of her professional knowledge as a wildlife biologist. Her writing is wonderfully intimate and warmly endearing, and without the slightest affectation. Be prepared to fall in love with the birds she loves.
