Rachel Basch's writing engages both my heart and my mind in equal measure. I loved The Passion of Reverend Nash not only for its plot but for its layered presentation of spiritual issues, and her new book did not disappoint. In fact, while the novel itself is quite compact, the story itself has sprawled outward in my mind, its telling and characters remaining with me long after I turned the last page. I loved the distinct voices of each of the characters she explores, both of whom seemed very believable to me, and she convincingly picks apart the wall that seems to exist between client and practitioner in the therapeutic relationship. Basch is a master of subtle detail, and her scenes never contain more than enough, yet each object, gesture, and line of dialogue is resonant and necessary. The Listener takes on the nature of longing and the ability of the human heart to heal--messily, haltingly, but heal nonetheless.

Good Read
An interesting read, but it ended abruptly.
This is a beautiful novel about love, joy, and grief, about growing up and figuring out who you will become, about parenting children who are becoming adults, and about the challenges and pleasures of forging new identities and relationships at any stage in life.
From the moment you read the first page of Rachel Basch's intriguing book, you will not be able to put it down. The story describes the struggles of a teenager with problems at once typical and unusual and the struggles of the teenager's therapist to help both the young patient and himself. While the teenager is dealing with problems adjusting to the first year of college and questions of identity more generally, the therapist faces the challenges of reconciling with his daughters and finding new love after his marriage has ended, a quest which cannot be fulfilled until he reveals some secrets of his own to his family.

Through their journey together, both "the listener" and his patient learn to reach out to their families, their community, and the world in general with compassion and love. As a reader, you will experience a similar journey, guided by a novelist who is a master of storytelling, painting compelling characters, and providing deep understanding of the human heart. Rachel Basch captures the perspectives of men, women, parents, and children with compassion and realism. You will long remember the characters and suspenseful plot of this novel.
Am looking forward to reading this book.
My expectations of this book were too high . The two main characters could have been way more interesting , author could have develop them way more. The story ended too abruptly. I am a therapist and was expecting some interesting insight into transgender youth .Also felt the way therapist conducted sessions was pretty inaccurate ,at least not my style . very disappointed in this book , not crazy about the style of writing found it confusing .
When I started reading The Listener, I wasn't sure if I would finish it as it initially seemed flat or one-dimensional. The Listener is none of these. As the story unfolds, compassion sets in as the stories of the various individuals come to full life. From listening, acceptance springs forward yet it isn't always simple or straightforward. Reading The Listener will, hopefully, encourage us all to listen with empathy, acceptance, and compassion.
